It's My Job to Resist You

by Franco Bertucci

I don't want to be a tyrant
or a nag and I hate to dissapoint.
I'm also scared of scarring you.
I want my daughter to like me.
So hard pressed I am to resist
your pleas and demands.

But you are five
and I know better-I must-
though my self-doubt is strong.
You may not take your flashlight to bed tonight
because the world needs you
to be unconscious for a while
and you need your sleep.
It is my job to resist you, sometimes.
