Mother Goose Was a Genius

by Franco Bertucci

Tinker, tailor
Soldier, sailor
Rich man, poor man
Plough-boy, thief.

Mother Goose was a genius.
But, like many geniuses,
her best stuff is not her most famous
and her hits have been over-played.

One, two,
buckle my shoe-

It's the good stuff you haven't heard
that makes a small boy quiet
and a grown boy wonder long.

Grey goose and gander
waft your wings together
and carry the good king's daughter
over the one-strand river.
