but gratuitous is the word
for the hopeless endings of certain books.

Hero: You want me to hang myself?
There's no reason for it.

Famous Author: There's no reason for anything.

Hero: Then you have no reason to protest
as I tie your hands to your desk
and drop this quality typewriter on your fingers.
