She Fights With Her Sweater

by Franco Bertucci

She fights with her sweater
and the sounds of the struggle
echo through the house.
We listen and await
the consummation of the battle.

Sometimes the sweater wins
and father rushes to her rescue,
to free her from the squeezing bonds
of the wiley sweater.

Sometimes the sweater loses and no one cares
as, once again, it silently bears
the humiliation of being stretched inside-out and backwards.
