The Ugly Church

by Franco Bertucci

I wanted to walk out
but everyone else was staying
and I wondered why.
So I stayed; and by the end
I had almost gotten used
to the cold lighting
awful decor
hollow floor plan
and the ubiquitous overhead projector.
Because the people were still there-
good people-
and it was truly taking place.
Even though the devil had won the bid
to design the building
and decorate-
he couldn't scare them away,
though he almost did me.
