To Be a Farmer

by Franco Bertucci

Everyone wants to be a farmer,
To be closer to the magic,
At least part-time.
To plant things,
To watch them grow,
And to try not to kill them.
To take pleasure in their growing,
To harvest the fruits,
Eat them till full
(if there's enough)
Save some for later.
(if there's enough)

Everyone needs to plant things
To see what they can do:
Seeds in the ground,
Sheep in the field,
Songs in the ear,
Or in the air.
Will they grow?
Will they multiply?
We hope.

Everyone needs to be a farmer,
To see how hard it is,
And how good.
Ideas turned into things.
(And we've got more for next year.)
